NBHA Virginia State Championships

It was a chilly day in the hills of Appomattox County, Virginia for the Virginia State Championships at the Clayton C. Bryant Arena on November 19, 2011.  Historically, Appomattox is the site of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, essentially ending the American Civil War.

 

Exhibitions started at 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. followed by Pee Wee, Open 1st Go, Youth, Senior, and Open Finals.  The Open format was one qualifying round taking the top 15 from each division to the short go.  Pee Wee posted 15 entries, Open class posted 122 entries, Youth class posted 56 entries and the Senior class 32 entries.

 

Pee Wee Division

           

Out of 15 entries in the Pee Wee class, the Champion was Olivia Hargis on Chippewa clocking a 15.279.  Reserve went to Jacob Butler on VF Big Star Bound and 3rd place was Josie Adsit on Money.  Paige Dowden on Peppy was 4th and 5th went to Josie Adsit on Sassy Chick.

 

Open Division

 

            The first go of the Open Saturday morning began in high gear with entrants vying for the $16,000 added money and awards.  Adam Roper won the go round riding Lady La Dash (owned by Sharon Bryant McCormick) with the fastest time of the day of 14.451 which earned him the Warren Morgan fastest time of the day trophy saddle.  The 2-D winner was Linda Ford with a 14.979 riding Nugget.  Tim Butler on Fancy won the 3-D with a time of 15.463 and the 4-D was won by Leslie Sutler riding Frosty with a 16.541. 

 

            Sixty riders made it back to the short go with Ducky Keller taking home top honors riding VF Big Star Bound (owned by Linda Smith & Tim Butler) with a blazing 14.480.  Reserve 1-D was a tie between Elizabeth Caldwell riding Love The Fame (owned by Clayton Bryant) and Adam Roper on Lady La Dash.   Third place was taken by Kathy Ramsey riding Day Star. 

 

            The 2-D champion was Sarah King onboard Fancy Wheeling Dixie with a time of 15.038.  Reserve was Sarah Allman on Jake and 3rd place went to Reed Dale riding March of Honor.

 

            Jeff Callahan took home champion 3-D honors on Kate with a time of 15.544.  Reserve went to Lorie Sikes-Dutzman riding Zans Winning Deck and 3rd place was Pam Benson onboard Aliby. 

 

            The 4-D champion was taken by Delisha Ross onboard Docs Dancing Native clocking a  16.731.  Tim Butler took Reserve champion on Brisco and 3rd went to Wendy Barnett riding Bar T Leo.

 

Youth Division

 

            Youth class only had one go vying for the coveted title of State Champion.  Elizabeth Caldwell took home the top honor of 1-D Champion onboard Love The Fame with a blazing 14.593.  Reserve 1-D and 3rd place went to Reed Dale riding March of Honor and Dyna Rae Honor, respectively. 

 

            The 2-D champion was Holly Longest riding The Pacemaker with a time of 15.100.  Reserve was Morgan Fretwell on Gus Who and 3rd place went to Sarah Allman riding Jake. 

 

            Amanda Lawson took home champion 3-D honors piloting Dixie to a time of 15.601.  Reserve went to Stephanie Cox riding Smash and 3rd place was to Meredith Adams on Jessies Girl. 

 

            The 4-D champion and reserve was taken by Stephanie Cox riding Fancy with a time of 16.626 and Buckshot, respectively.  Third place went to Cole Smith on Mustang Joe.

 

Senior Division

 

            Senior class had one go with Ducky Keller’s one-man show claiming the 1-D Championship on VF Big Star Bound with a time of 14.711 showing on the scoreboard, Reserve on Chief, and 3rd place on Missy. 

 

            The 2-D champion was Tony Campbell riding Shady with a time of 15.293.  Reserve was Ducky Keller onboard Tonys Magnolia Bar (owned by Peggy Kanthack & Roger Newcomb). 

 

            Tony Campbell also took home champion 3-D honors onboard Zip clocking a 15.721.  Reserve was Pam Benson riding Sunlight Drifter and 3rd place went to Mitch Taller on Kate. 

 

            The 4-D champion was taken by Bob Phillips riding Panamas Moon Bug with a time of 16.756.  Billy Ford took Reserve champion on Pepper and 3rd place went to Lee Yancey riding Tequilla.

 

Appreciation and Thanks

            The state year-end banquet was held March 3, 2012 at the Cumberland Volunteer Fire House, Cumberland, VA with good food, award presentations and dancing.  State Championship awards were presented to the top 5 in each division for the 2011 Virginia State Finals and the Warren Morgan fastest time of the day Pro Rider trophy saddle donated by Debra & Thomas Morgan and family.   Pro Rider saddles were awarded to the Pee Wee, Open, Youth, & Senior Champions.  Reserve Champions received embroidered jackets.  Additional awards:  Third place received an embroidered grooming organizer, 4th place received crystal studded spur straps, and 5th place received an embroidered hay bag.  Red Eagle Creations owned by Sue Harris was the designer of all the placing awards.  A special award was also given in memory of 11 year old Arianna Cox who tragically lost her life in August 2011.  This will be an annual sportsmanship award given to a youth in honor of Arianna.  This year the award went to her lifelong friend, Bobbie Jo Adsit.   Along with the title of Champion, all the divisional winners received an NBHA Wildcard to use at either the Youth NBHA Championships or the NBHA World Championships in Perry, Georgia.

 

            Each of the District Directors:  Jan Watson, VA-00; Peggy Kanthack & Roger Newcomb, VA-01; Sue Harris, VA-02; Michael Britt, VA-03; David Dye, VA-04; Brenda Dodd, VA-05; & Sharon Sponaugle & Laci Neil, VA-06 were awarded a rolling backpack.  Ed Owen and Julia Melton who assisted the State Director with fundraising and other contributions were also awarded a rolling backpack.  The Youth representative (Vicki Dale), Senior representative (Vanessa Evans), and Webmaster (Lewis Parsley) were awarded a nylon briefcase for their contribution throughout the year.  Tony and Gayle Campbell who volunteered to cook for the banquet were awarded a document holder.

 

            A special award (belt buckle) was presented to Clayton Bryant to thank him for everything he has done for the sport of barrel racing.  He has allowed both the NBHA and IBRA to use his wonderful facility in Appomattox without asking anything in return.  Thank you very much.

 

            After the awards presentation, the DJ rocked the house until the wee hours of the morning!
